2026-06-13: Altar Building

from $20.00

Building an altar might feel right for you if you’ve been wanting to more intentionally hold space in your life for celebration, grief, remembrance, ancestors, gratitude, recognition, and more. Altars offer a tangible place to remind us of these intentions, and ground using connecting elements.

Participants will have the opportunity to build altar structures, using a combination of found items, thrifted components, and art materials for simple altar builds. Or use prebuilt structures as is. Artists are encouraged to bring personal items that they want to be a part of their altar, or a structure base if they have a particular shape in mind. Please be mindful of your own cultural connections and bring non-appropriative imagery/items.

This workshop centers the normalization of grief and memoriam, and the practice of remembering/honoring/celebrating life, love, and death. This is an opportunity to build a personalized altar, and share space with other artists that want to use altars within their own life rituals.

The workshop will include altar examples and historical context of altars in and outside of religious spaces.

Sliding scale $20-30, $40-$55 encouraged for those with disposable income. Any payment over $40 will go directly to Sun Seeker in Milwaukee, WI for ongoing mutual aid needs.
