Want to volunteer with us?

Communication is an all volunteer-run space. We are dedicated to fostering a vibrant creative community, curating an all ages sober space for all forms of artistic expression. We intentionally create as safe of a space as we can for everyone that comes through. Our mission is to facilitate an artistic community that can reach throughout the Midwest.

VOLUNTEER opportunities

Many of our volunteers are involved in multiple areas and jump in as their schedules allow and as we have a need. Our core collective team is committed to making sure you as a volunteer have the information and support you need when you’re at Communication.

Events

Volunteers can represent Communication during live shows at the space!

  • Sound board: Sound volunteers learn how to use audio equipment, and liaise with performers to set up and manage the sound board during live sets. Learn the basic skills of a sound technician, and how sound functions in a space.  No experience needed, and training is provided! Great job for aspiring sound engineers and musicians looking to pick up tech skills.

  • Door: An essential job! Our door volunteers greet guests at shows, take cover, and support live events as needed. They also run any sales for the Shop during these events. Training is provided!

Other events duties may include supporting promotional work (including physical flyers and/or online strategy) or other community outreach.

Markets

Volunteers provide support at off-site markets around Madison. Shop volunteers greet visitors, answer questions, and run any sales through our point of sale software, and keep things organized.

Arts Programming

We work hard to coordinate and promote various styles of workshops at Communication! Do you have experience in arts events coordination or leadership? Are you passionate about making creative workshops accessible to our community? These volunteer opportunities might be for you.

Exhibitions

Do you have experience curating and/or installing a show? Volunteers can assist with planning and installation of an art exhibition. Gain the skills of a preparator, learn the process of putting together an exhibition, communicating with artists, and be the coordinator for reception events.

Print Collective

Are you a member of our risograph print collective, or interested in getting involved to a greater degree? Our print collective volunteers manage inventory, memberships, and printing projects. We also love looking for new ways to build community within the print collective members, and bridging between our group and the Madison creative community at large.

Operations

  • Photographer/Documentation: Do you have an interest in event or show photography? We are thrilled to have volunteers available document events!  Some training provided.  All photographers are acknowledged/credited in social media/web content.
